Marion High School JROCT cadet Alysa Yancey, and her marksmanship team competed at the All-Army JROTC Air Rifle Marksmanship Championship earlier this month. The Marion marksmen shot against 119 of the very best shooters from across all of Army JROTC. In a tight battle over two days of record fire, Yancey earned the Silver Medal for the second place finish at Camp Perry, Ohio, one of the three regional locations for the championship.

The Marion squad finished in 11th place from among the 25 Army teams who qualified for the championship.

“This was another impressive finish for Alysa,” said team coach, retired Lt. Col. David Farlow. “She seems to thrive in these high-pressure matches.”

Earlier in February, Yancey was an instant qualifier to attend the Junior Olympics to be held in April at the USA Olympic Training Facility in Colorado Springs. This will be her third visit in as many years.

“I was a bit nervous going into the last shot of the final,” Yancey said. She and another marksman were tied for second place at the Army JROTC championship. “I knew I had to concentrate and make that last shot count.”

And, with just a few seconds remaining on the clock, Yancey worked her magic and made the shot to secure the second-place finish.

The other members of the Marion team competing included Haden Montgomery, Emily Smith, and Michelle Rasor.  Montgomery finished 26th among the very competitive field of marksmen. This was the first visit to the Army National Championship for Smith and Rasor.

Yancey has qualified to advance to the JROTC All-Service National Championship in March, where she will face the best marksmen from Army, Navy, Air force and Marine Corps JROTC Programs.
