Amazon recently released artist renderings and photos of the first phase of its HQ2 development project at Metropolitan Park, Virginia.

In a release from Amazon, the company wants the development to have a focus on community and sustainability.

Amazon has donated more than $30 million to the local nonprofits, community groups and small businesses in addition to the more than $500 million in low-rate loans and grants for up to 2,300 affordable homes in the HQ2 region.

Sustainability goals for the project include 20% energy savings below the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and AirConditioning Engineers' (ASHRAE) baseline, 50% water savings below building code and 75% carbon emissions reduction in building operations.

The company has also committed $2.5 billion to bring more than 25,000 jobs to the area over the next decade as part of Met Park, the two 22-story office buildings with 50,000 square feet of retail space for local small businesses and a 2-acre public park, which will be completed in 2023.

Development on the HQ2 project began in 2020 and has since added 100 local contractors working on the construction and 3,000 skilled workers, which have put in a collective total of 1.4 million labor hours into the project.

Met Park will be powered by electricity from the 120-megawatt solar farm being constructed in Pittsylvania County, Virginia.
