Marana High School will continue to have its school resource officer thanks to an agreement between the Marana Unified School District and the Town of Marana, who will share the cost of the position. Until this year, it had been funded by an Arizona Department of Education grant.

The Marana Town Council recently approved the extension of its agreement with the MUSD, which was originally made in 2014 and provides a resource officer for Marana High School.

The agreement will allow Marana Police Department School Resource Officer David Samorano to continue serving at the school, a position he has held continuously for the past four years. Samorano has been recognized twice as School Resource Officer of the Year during his time at Marana High School.

“Officer presence on the campus provides a quicker response to incidents, whether small or extraordinary,” Samorano said in a statement. “Through a School Resource Officer, relationships are forged and the future leaders of our community are educated."

MUSD and the Town of Marana plan to reapply for the school resource officer grant during the next funding cycle.
